KUCHING (Oct 2): A 56-year-old woman died after the vehicle she was in collided with a parked van on Jalan Gedong-Simunjan near here today.

According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Operations Control Centre (PGO) in a statement, an emergency call was received around 3.01pm before a team from the Simunjan station, led by Operations Commander PBK II Fairus Bin Jamain@Taufek, were dispatched to the scene, located 18km away.

Upon arrival at the scene around 3.18pm, rescuers observed that the collision involved a Proton Saga car with two occupants and a Nissan Vanette van which was parked by the roadside.

The female victim, identified as Irim Gintang, was trapped in the front passenger seat of the car, while the 37-year-old male driver, who is her son, had exited the vehicle before Bomba arrived at the scene, the department said.

Rescuers used special rescue tools to extricate the victim out of the car before medical personnel pronounced her dead at the scene.

Her body was then handed over to the police for further action.

Bomba personnel then carried out clearing operations to remove debris from the road before wrapping up the operation at 4.07pm.
