LUNDU (Aug 29): Construction work on the Kampung Selampit Bridge here shall commence in October, said Opar assemblyman Billy Sujang.
He said the Letter of Acceptance (LoA) for the project has been handed over by the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) to the responsible contractor on Aug 21.
“The contract starts on Sept 4, which is two weeks after the handing over of LoA and construction work will commence in Oct,” he told reporters when met at SMK Senibong here today.
Earlier, Billy joined the Minister of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn in presenting aid to the families of the students from Kampung Selampit who were involved in the recent boat capsize incident.
The assemblyman further disclosed that the 200-metre bridge project is expected to be completed within three years’ time, starting October, 2024 with a cost of RM27.9 million.
This includes the construction of a new 1.2-kilometre access road with an additional cost of RM17 million, he added.
“We will also provide compensation payments to affected landowners soon and the ground-breaking ceremony will take place in mid-September,” he said.
While waiting for the bridge to be completed, Billy said he would provide a new ‘perahu tambang’ for residents with funding from the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA).
The boat, he added, would be specially designed with safety features and would be delivered soon.
