KUCHING: The Indonesian government will move 100,000 of its civil servants to Nusantara by 2029.

Disclosing this, Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia in Kuching Raden Sigit Witjaksono said that the transfer would be done in stages.

He noted that it is in line with efforts to reach the target of 1.5 million people in Indonesia’s new capital city.

“The staff transfer will be done in stages and this year, a total of 2,000 people will be transferred there.

“This amount involves 37 ministries that have already prepared the names to be transferred and it will be implemented gradually,” he said.

He said this at a press conference after attending the Indonesia Independence Celebration at the Republic of Indonesia Consulate General in Kuching, yesterday.

He also expressed his appreciation to the Sarawak government for the collaborations carried out through various aspects.

Raden hoped that the cooperation between Indonesia and Sarawak could be maintained for mutual benefit, especially for the people.

Meanwhile, he also called for new flight routes between main cities in Sarawak and Nusantara to be opened.

“So far, we only have a road from Sarawak to Nusantara and the journey to get there takes quite a long time.

“Hence, airlines need to open new routes because this will be a great opportunity to improve the economy of Sarawak and Indonesia,” he said.

According to him, there was a direct Kuching-Pontianak flight before but it was stopped for a while.

“We really hope that direct flights from Kuching to Balikpapan can be opened because many requests have been received, even some from the city of Miri asking for flights to Balikpapan.

“This can enhance access and connectivity between the two governments involved,” he said.
