MIRI (July 16): The Magistrates’ Court here today fined a 57-year-old man RM900 in default one week in jail for having illegal lottery tickets in his possession.
Magistrate Randu Rangen convicted Thomas Tambi of Promin Jaya, Lutong here on his own guilty plea to a charge framed under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1963, which is punishable under the same Section.
The Section provides for a fine not exceeding RM5,000, or up to six months in jail, or both upon conviction.
According to the facts of the case, Thomas was found to be in possession of a few pieces of paper containing illegal lottery ticket numbers on July 13 at around 4.30pm near Emart Tudan.
Insp Mudzilawati Abdul Rahman prosecuted the case while Thomas was unrepresented by legal counsel.
