Awang Bemee now a senator

KUCHING: Former Nangka assemblyman Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah was sworn in as Senator at Dewan Negara today.

He took his oath of office before Dewan Negara deputy president Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed at about 11.30 am.

His appointment, which received consent from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, will be effective today until July 14, 2027.

Awang Bemee is also expected to take over as Dewan Negara president and swearing in on July 22, coinciding with Sarawak Day.

He will replace the late senator Datuk Mutang Tagal, who passed away due to heart complications on May 10, at the age of 70.

Awang Bemee was nominated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg as the candidate for the post.

Originally from Sibu and born on June 22, 1959, Awang Bemee holds a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) degree from the University of Malaya.

He was admitted to the High Court of Borneo Sarawak in 1984 and has been practising as an advocate and solicitor since then.

He is a partner in the legal firm, Messrs. Awang Lai Sandhu and Co.

He is a former Nangka assemblman from 2004 to 2009.

He has been the chairman of Kuching Port Authority since 1997 and is currently an independent non-executive director of Sarawak Plantation Berhad (SPB).
