KUCHING, Dec 23: The main electrical cables powering Hock Seng Lee’s (HSL) Christmas Street trees at La Promenade were cut and stolen by thieves late Monday night (Dec 22), causing a power outage and disrupting festive decorations in the area.

In a post on its social media accounts today, HSL said its security personnel detected the outage at around midnight and subsequently found that the main electrical wiring for the Christmas installations had been deliberately cut and removed.

“It is with great disappointment and frustration that we have to inform the public that the main electrical wires for all Christmas Street trees were cut and stolen by thieves last night. Our guards reported a power outage around midnight.

“HSL’s building and events team are working around the clock to restore the lights. We hope to get this done before Dec 25,” said HSL.

The lights are part of HSL’s annual La Promenade Christmas Street, which kicks off with a lighting ceremony that has become one of the area’s most-loved year-end traditions.

The tradition began in 2021, and the event has grown in scale and imagination ever since. — DayakDaily
