SIBU (July 21): Creative industries and arts are essential for the future of urban development, says Sibu MP Oscar Ling.
According to him, they are not merely accessories to urban development but fundamental drivers of urban growth and evolution.
“Imagine walking through a town without colour, music and urban expression, where every building looks the same and every street remains unchanged, and the only sounds are the hums of traffic and the bustle of commercial activities.
“Although such town functions efficiently, it lacks soul, character and the spark that makes urban life vibrant and fulfilling,” he said in his speech at the Sibu Urban Arts Festival (SUAF) in Sibu Heritage Centre yesterday.
Elaborating, he said art could bring economic benefits as creative industries could generate jobs, attract tourism and stimulate the local economy.
“Art galleries, theatres, music festivals and cultural events attract visitors near and far, boosting local businesses like restaurants, hotels and retail stores.
“Studies have shown that cities with thriving art scenes tend to have higher levels of economic growth and resilience.
“For example, the revitalisation of districts like Soho in New York City or Wynwood Walls in Miami, which were neglected areas that had been transformed into bustling hubs of economic activities and innovations,” he explained.
Additionally, Ling said art could also foster community and social cohesion.
He said by creating public art, community theatres and local music events, it could create shared experiences that would bring people together, bridging social and cultural gaps.
“A town that invests in the arts is also investing in the well-being of its residents, making it a more attractive place to live, work and play.
“Art also drives innovation and creativity, which are important in addressing the complex challenges of urban development.
“Creative thinkers and artists often view the world differently, bringing new perspectives and solutions to problems.
“By investing in the arts, we are investing in the economic vitality, social cohesion, quality of life, innovation and identity of our city,” he said, emphasising that creative industries and arts were not a luxury or trends, but a fundamental part of urban development.
Also present yesterday was organising chairman Chris Ling.
