Her story embodies resilience, passion, and a steadfast commitment to empowering girls through education.

Her transition from engineer to pageant contestant may seem unconventional, but for Mardiana, it is a natural extension of her multifaceted personality and her desire to challenge societal norms.

“I’ve always believed that women can excel in any field they choose.

“Engineering taught me discipline and problem-solving skills that are invaluable in any industry, including modeling,” said this beauty queen of Iban-Melanau-Malay-Chinese-Bugis-Thai descent.

Advocacy for girls’ education

Beyond the glitz and glamour of pageantry, Mardiana’s true passion lies in advocacy work.

She fervently supports education, particularly for girls, believing it to be the cornerstone of a progressive society.

Her advocacy is deeply personal; growing up mostly in Miri, Mardiana witnessed firsthand the barriers that girls often face in pursuing education.

She herself encountered numerous challenges at a young age and chose education as a means to overcome them.

“Education is a powerful tool for change. In a world where everyone wants to be a social media influencer, people tend to forget the value of education.

“Education opens doors and creates endless opportunities. Hence, I want to ensure that every girl has the chance to learn, grow, dream, and achieve their goals.

“It acts as a foundation for them, as they will eventually have their own families and be able to make quality decisions in life,” she pointed out.

Mardiana’s advocacy work includes partnering with local universities to provide motivation, educational resources, and support.

As the winner in the Ms category of Miss Ms Stellar World Malaysia Borneo 2024, she aims to create an environment where education is accessible and valued for all, regardless of gender.

Designing her path

In a blend of engineering precision and creative flair, Mardiana designs her own dresses for pageantry and modelling.

Each dress reflects her cultural heritage and innovative spirit, merging traditional Sarawakian motifs with contemporary fashion.

“Designing my own dresses allows me to express my identity and journey.

“It’s a fusion of my past, present, culture, and aspirations that I showcase on stage,” she said.

Her designs have garnered attention not just for their beauty but also for the stories they tell.

Each piece she adorns reflects a chapter of her life, from the intricate patterns inspired by Sarawak’s rich tapestry of cultures to the modern cuts that signify her forward-thinking vision.

For instance, she incorporated a sustainability theme into her traditional dress at the recent Miss Ms Stellar World Malaysia Borneo 2024 grand finale. She chose turquoise blue, symbolising awareness of water conservation.

Role model for many

Mardiana’s venture into pageantry and modelling is more than just a personal pursuit; it’s a bold statement to the world.

As a hijab-wearing contestant, she challenges stereotypes and breaks down barriers, paving the way for more inclusive representation in the fashion industry.

Her journey resonates with many, especially young girls, who see in her a reflection of their dreams and possibilities.

“I want to show that you can stay true to your values and beliefs while pursuing your dreams.

“Diversity should be celebrated, and everyone deserves the opportunity to shine in their own unique way,” she said.

Kimi Tomas: A visionary beauty queen

Mardiana’s ultimate goal is to bring Sarawak’s name to the global stage — a vision she shares with Kimi Tomas, the winner of Mrs Global Asian 2023 and director of Miss Ms Stellar World Borneo 2024.

Through her participation in international pageants like Miss Ms Stellar World Malaysia Borneo 2024 under Kimi’s direction, as well as her modelling work, she aims to showcase Sarawak’s rich cultural heritage and its potential.

“Sarawak has so much to offer, from our traditions and natural beauty to our innovative spirit. I want the world to see and appreciate what we have.

“I am grateful that Kimi has provided the platform for all advocacies to be heard, regardless of background.

“This inclusive approach has allowed voices from all walks of life to be heard, promoting a spirit of unity and cultural pride.

“Thank you, Kimi, for your unwavering dedication in bringing Sarawak to the world stage.

“Your work continues to inspire and empower, leaving an indelible mark on all who have had the privilege to know and work with you,” she said proudly.

Mardiana’s journey from engineer to pageant contestant is a testament to her resilience, creativity, and unwavering commitment to making a difference.

As she steps onto the global stage, she carries with her the hopes and dreams of many, using her platform to advocate for girls’ education and celebrate her cultural heritage.

In doing so, she is not just breaking barriers; she is setting new standards and inspiring a new generation to dream big and achieve even bigger.

So, ladies, don’t be afraid to chase your dreams. But first, ensure you have the most powerful tool at your disposal: education!

Dare to dream, because anything is possible.
