Drug abuse: Man in Miri fined RM2,300, placed on two years of police supervision

MIRI (July 16): The Magistrates’ Court here today fined a man RM2,300 in default four months’ imprisonment for abusing drugs.

Magistrate Randu Rangen also ordered Rusli Baharuddin, 40, of Ladang 3 Kampung Muhibbah in Sibuti to be placed under police supervision for two years.

The charge against the accused was framed under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 15(1) of the same Act.

The Section carries a jail sentence of up to two years or a fine not exceeding RM5,000, and immediate supervision for a period not exceeding three years.

According to the facts of the case, Rusli was tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine at the Miri Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division office at around 12.25pm on Jan 6 this year.

In mitigation, the unrepresented accused pleaded for leniency as he is a divorcee with three children and does not have a permanent job.

Separately, Magistrate Randu fined a man RM900 in default one week in jail for possessing an illegal lottery ticket.

Thomas Tambi of Promin Jaya, Lutong here pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1963, which provides for a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or up to six months in jail or both, upon conviction.

He committed the offence near Emart Tudan at around 4.30pm on July 13.

Insp Mudzilawati Abdul Rahman prosecuted both cases.
