Duo caught red-handed stealing cables in manhole

BINTULU (July 14): Two men were caught in the act cutting cables inside a manhole owned by a telecommunications company at Jalan Sultan Iskandar early Saturday.

Bintulu police chief Supt Nixon Joshua Ali said the company’s security personnel were patrolling the area when they spotted the duo around 2.10am.

“They immediately alerted the police and a team dispatched to the location arrested the suspects on the spot,” he said in a statement today.

Seized from the suspects were pieces of cut cable, a ladder, saw and other items, he added.

“A background check revealed they have prior records for theft and drug-related offences. Urine test carried out also found both to be drug-positive,” he said.

Nixon said the suspects will be remanded for further investigation under Section 379 of the Penal Code.

He said police will continue collaborating with all parties to curb cable theft, and called on the public to channel information on such crime to the district police headquarters on 086-318304.
