KUCHING: The Lions Club of Kuching Lavender is promoting early hearing detection among preschoolers through a screening at Krista Lumba Kuda Kindergarten, one of many stations under the project.

In a statement last Friday (Oct. 9), the club said its president, Connie Tan, who is also the organising chairperson of the Kids Hearing Aid Screening Project, is leading the initiative to promote children’s hearing health.

The project aims to improve the quality of life of children with hearing loss through accessible, comfortable and effective hearing aid technology.

It also seeks to raise awareness among parents, teachers and communities about childhood hearing loss and the importance of early intervention.

The Lions Clubs of Kuching in Region 1, through the Lions Club of Kuching Kota Samarahan (LCKKS), are carrying out the project in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), Sarawak Hear and government hospitals.

They are promoting early hearing screening for preschool children, especially those in rural and remote communities.

Initiated in November 2025, the project aims to screen 1,000 children, helping to identify hearing problems early and ensure timely intervention to support their speech, learning and overall development.

Guided by the Lions’ motto, ‘We Serve’, the initiative aspires to expand throughout Sarawak, giving every child equal access to hearing health services and the opportunity to learn and grow confidently.

Tan also thanked LCKKS president Richard Yeo, founder of the ‘Hearing You’ project, as well as the kindergarten principal, teachers and Lions members for their cooperation in making the initiative possible.

The Lions Club of Kuching Lavender is committed to serving the community through humanitarian initiatives that promote health, early intervention and the wellbeing of children, women and families.
