KUALA LUMPUR: Goon International College (GIC) and Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) are strengthening their strategic collaboration to create more international higher education opportunities for Malaysian students.
The initiative focuses on opportunities for students from Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak to pursue their studies at UGM, while providing them with clearer pathways to higher education.
As part of the collaboration, GIC will also offer scholarship opportunities to selected students enrolled in its Foundation in Science programme, particularly those who demonstrate outstanding academic performance and potential to pursue higher-level studies.
Potential fields of study include the Bachelor of Medicine (MBBS), Bachelor of Dentistry, Bachelor of Pharmacy and Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine.
GIC’s Director, P. Prabagaran Perumal (second left) speaks at the press conference on the GIC-UGM collaboration in Kuala Lumpur today.GIC’s Director, P. Prabagaran Perumal said the collaboration aims to assist local students in pursuing their studies at UGM, with a target intake of 100 students in January next year.
“We want students to understand that there are various pathways for them to advance their existing education to a higher level. Through this collaboration, we hope these educational opportunities will become more accessible.
“GIC will also offer scholarship opportunities to selected students enrolled in the Foundation in Science programme. This initiative is aimed at providing additional support to students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement,” he said.
Prabagaran said this at a press conference following the GIC-UGM Strategic Collaboration at GIC here today, which was also attended by representatives from both institutions and the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Kuala Lumpur.
Meanwhile, UGM’s Department of Anatomy Dean, Prof. Teguh Budipitojo welcomed the collaboration, describing it as an opportunity to strengthen educational ties between Malaysia and Indonesia.
“We hope this collaboration will provide Malaysian students with greater access to academic opportunities, information and international learning experiences at UGM.
“Currently, there are about 70 Malaysian students at UGM’s Department of Anatomy. I believe this collaboration will increase the number of Malaysian students. This is very good for the Malaysia-Indonesia education sector,” he said.
Teguh said the collaboration also had the potential to be expanded to broader academic engagement, student mobility and other forms of institutional cooperation in the future.
The GIC-UGM collaboration also provides opportunities for both institutions to explore areas such as student mobility, student activities, academic programmes and other forms of institutional cooperation, subject to further discussions and mutual agreement.
The initiative is expected to serve as a foundation for the implementation of various programmes in the future that can enhance learning experiences, student development and Malaysia-Indonesia academic relations.
