Explosion on vessel in Samalaju leaves 2 workers dead, 1 injured

KUCHING, Aug 3: Two men were killed while another suffered burns in an explosion on a vessel in Samalaju yesterday (Aug 2).

Bintulu police chief Supt Nixon Joshua Ali, in a statement today, said the two deceased have been identified as Mohd Firdaus, 36, from Perak, who is the ship’s assistant engineer, and George, 24, a Sarawakian, who is the ship’s oiler.

According to Nixon, the third victim, a 22-year-old man from Sabah who is also the ship oiler, suffered 30 per cent burns on his face and arm and is currently being treated for his injuries.

He said no criminal elements have been found so far, and the incident is categorised as sudden death.

He also said that the victim’s body was taken to the hospital for post-mortem.

“The public is advised to not make any speculation on the incident,” he added. — DayakDaily
