MIRI, Dec 23: Road users have been reminded to prioritise safety and help maintain cleanliness, especially amid increased traffic during the holiday and festive period along the Sarawak Pan Borneo Highway.

The reminder was issued during the launch of the 2025 Festive Season Road Safety Campaign by the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR Sarawak) at Pujut, Miri, aimed at promoting safer driving practices as well as responsible behaviour among motorists travelling during peak periods.

JKR Sarawak director Datu Ir Cassidy Morris said traffic volume typically surges during school holidays and festive celebrations, making it crucial for road users to remain vigilant, patient and disciplined on the road, particularly along major routes such as the Pan Borneo Highway.

Carrying the message “Pandu Cermat, Sampai Pun Selamat” (Drive Carefully, Arrive Safely), the campaign emphasised basic safety measures before long journeys, including ensuring vehicles are roadworthy with properly functioning tyres, brakes, lights and windscreen wipers, wearing seat belts, complying with speed limits and road signs, using P-turns correctly, and stopping to rest when fatigued.

In addition to road safety, Cassidy also urged motorists to play their part in keeping the Pan Borneo Highway clean by disposing of rubbish responsibly and respecting public facilities, noting that cleanliness contributes to a safer and more pleasant travel environment for all.

During the programme, JKR Sarawak’s top management engaged directly with road users, offering advice on safe driving practices and distributing safety information.

As part of the initiative, helmets were also handed out to motorcyclists, sponsored by the Social Security Organisation (Perkeso).

The campaign saw the participation of multiple agencies, including the Miri District Police Headquarters, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) Miri branch, the Miri Resident and District Office, PETRONAS, and road maintenance service provider PBH Asset Management, reflecting a collective commitment to enhancing road safety and public awareness across Sarawak during the festive season. — DayakDaily
