KUCHING, May 26: Five local men were arrested in a police raid on a house in Kenyalang Park here which was believed to be operating as a job scam calling centre targeting victims in neighbouring countries.
Kuching District Police Chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the raid was carried out at about 6.30pm on Monday (May 25) by officers and personnel from the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) and Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) of the Sarawak Police Contingent Headquarters.
He said police also seized computers, mobile phones and several communication devices believed to have been used in the online scam operations.
“Preliminary investigations found that the syndicate operated as a calling centre involved in job scam activities conducted online, targeting victims from neighbouring countries,” he said in a statement today.
According to Alexson, all five suspects, aged between 23 and 42, are believed to have been working full-time for the syndicate.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which carries a jail term of between one and 10 years, whipping and a possible fine upon conviction.
Investigations are also being conducted under Section 120(b) of the Penal Code for criminal conspiracy, which provides for imprisonment of up to six months, a fine, or both.
All suspects were brought before the Kuching Magistrate’s Court today, where police obtained a four-day remand order to facilitate investigations.
Alexson urged members of the public to assist police by providing information on criminal activities, adding that cooperation is vital in curbing crime.
