KUCHING, Oct 8: A major international player with significant global standing is currently exploring investment opportunities in Sarawak, with its representatives expected to visit the State within the next two weeks.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the company was a prominent global player with ranking on the Forbes List, but stopped short of revealing its identity or the nature of the proposed investment.
“It cannot be revealed just yet, but there is a major international player currently looking at Sarawak.
“In the next two weeks, representatives will be coming to visit Sarawak, and it is not a small company,” he said as reported by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas).
He was speaking at an appreciation dinner for Sarawak Energy Group chief executive officer Datuk Sharbini Suhaili, who will retire on Oct 31, at a leading hotel here on Wednesday (Oct 7).
Abang Johari said the interest demonstrated the growing attention Sarawak was receiving from international industry players, particularly as the State accelerates the transformation of its energy sector.
He said shifts in global energy demand, coupled with the growing emphasis on cleaner energy sources, were creating opportunities for Sarawak to capitalise on its renewable energy and gas resources.
“The entire economic landscape has changed because there is a need for green energy, or if not green energy, then blue energy.
“That is why we are negotiating and preparing to leverage the gas reserves we possess,” he said.
Abang Johari said Sarawak was positioning itself to respond to changing global energy requirements by developing its energy resources while pursuing cleaner and lower-carbon solutions.
Also present were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian, Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Deputy Minister for Utility (Sarawak Energy and PETROS) Datuk Ibrahim Baki, and incoming Sarawak Energy Group CEO Dato Ruslan Abdul Ghani. — DayakDaily
