Heavy rain disrupts S’wak vs S’gor tennis women’s doubles match for gold, postponed to tomorrow

The heavy downpour at SLTA Centre which disrupted today’s evening matches.

KUCHING (Aug 22): Heavy rain disrupted the 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma) tennis women’s doubles gold medal match between Sarawak and Selangor this evening, causing it to be postponed despite the Sarawak pair being in the lead.

Soo Hui Yii and Lydia Liong were leading 2-1 against Selangor’s Sharifah Elsa Wan Abdul Rahman and Saw Jo Leen when the match stopped abruptly due to the sudden downpour.

Liong was also due to play in the mixed doubles gold medal match today, partnering Hii Shieng Wee to face Perak’s Leong siblings Mitsuki and Shihomi.

Also affected were the bronze medal matches involving Perak against Penang in the men’s doubles, and Selangor against Penang in the mixed doubles.

The technical committee in their meeting has decided all these matches, scheduled at the SLTA Centre, will resume tomorrow morning (Aug 23).

Fine weather earlier in the morning saw the completion of gold medal matches for the men’s singles and women’s singles events.

Mitsuki won the gold in men’s singles by defeating Daniel Leong Prickett 6-1,6-4 in all Perak encounters.

Sharifah Elsa, whose parents are from Sarawak, won the gold medal in women’s singles after defeating Shihomi 6-1, 6-1.

Zoee Mak and Chloe Chong won the bronze for Selangor in the women’s doubles after beating their opponents from Johor.
