MIRI (Oct 19): Some 600 participants took part in the National Sports Day (HSN) Miri Division event at Marina Recreational Park today.

The event kicked off as early as 6am, with participants engaging in aerobics to warm up before being flagged off for the HSN 2024 Madani Fun Run and Fun Walk.

In addition to the main events, participants also enjoyed various other activities throughout the day.

Miri Mayor Adam Yii, in his opening remarks, highlighted the importance of the event as a platform for promoting a culture of sports within the community.

“I believe this goal of exercising and staying healthy can be achieved with the support and involvement of everyone.

“Sports is, in fact, the best instrument for fostering unity among the people. Besides promoting sports as part of an active and healthy lifestyle, it can help reduce the rate of chronic diseases in the community,” he said.

Yii, who is also Pujut assemblyman, emphasised the economic benefits of sports, noting how the industry contributes to the country’s development.

“Through the growth of the sports industry, it is encouraging the public to engage in sports, which in turn boosts the purchase and sale of sports equipment, indirectly supporting the sports and recreation sector ecosystem.

“Hence, with HSN that is held once a year, it is hoped that every segment of the community here will continue to embrace a sporting culture throughout the year for their well-being,” he added.
