KUCHING (July 25): The Magistrates’ Court here today imposed a RM300 good behaviour bond on a teenager for a period of one year after he pleaded guilty to purchasing an illegal lottery ticket.
Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan made the order after reviewing the 17-year-old boy’s probation report presented by the Welfare Department.
The teenager was charged under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which provides for a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or imprisonment that may extend to six months, or both, upon conviction.
He committed the offence at a shop lot in Jalan Wan Alwi here at around 12.45pm on June 20 this year.
Based on the facts of the case, police raided the shop and detained the accused, who was seated inside, while also seizing a mobile phone, RM60 in cash and other items.
An investigation found the mobile phone had been used to purchase an illegal lottery ticket.
In a separate case in the same courtroom, a 40-year-old man was fined RM3,500 in default four months in jail after he pleaded guilty to possessing drugs.
Ahmad Zaidi Kamarudin made the plea after the charge under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 12(3) of the same Act, was read to him before Magistrate Mason.
He committed the offence at a roadside behind a premises in Kampung Tabuan Lot here at around 4pm on Feb 8 this year.
Based on the case facts, police detained Ahmad on suspicion of involvement in drug-related activities, and found in his sling bag a transparent packet of substance believed to be drugs.
A chemist report dated April 19 this year confirmed the substance was methamphetamine weighing 1.37g.
