KUCHING (July 21): Students and teachers at SMK Sebuyau will have to carry out their activities under canopy tents since many of the school buildings and the hall are not safe to use, said Sebuyau assemblyman Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi.

He shared on his Facebook page that he had approved funds to instal these canopy tents for temporary use while waiting for the completion of the new school to house SMK Sebuyau.

“SMK Sebuyau is one of the dilapidated schools in Sarawak. We are waiting for the new school to be built on a new site that has been readied for a long time in the new township of Sebuyau.

“I have spoken many times about the condition of this school which is dilapidated but still accommodates almost a thousand students.

“It is a pity to see the teachers and students having to use this kind of facility compared to their friends in other schools who have much better facilities,” he stated.

Julaihi, who is Sarawak Minister of Utility and Telecommunication, visited the school yesterday to inspect the installation of the canopy tents.

According to him, the canopy tents have been fully installed although there is still work that needs to be completed by the supplier.

While the students will have to adapt to this learning environment under canopy tents, Julaihi said the aim and will to achieve good academic results must remain.

“Thank God the SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia) results last year (2023) have improved despite being in a state of deprivation,” he added.

Accompanying and briefing Julaihi during the visit to the school was SMK Sebuyau principal Awang Abas Awang Lawi and his two senior assistants, as well as Sebuyau District Officer Ayuradiman Bujang and Sebuyau service centre officer Ahmad Ayup.
