KUCHING, Jan 26: Federal Minister of Works and Kapit Member of Parliament (MP) Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi has proposed that Katibas assemblyman Lidam Assan be retained as a candidate for the upcoming Sarawak state election, citing the need for continuity in leadership to ensure sustained development for Song and surrounding areas.
In a Facebook post following the officiation of Dewan Kebiau Song in Kapit, Nanta said that development continuity requires a leader who is not only diligent but also has a proven track record in implementing development agendas that benefit the people.
He said Lidam, particularly in his role overseeing socioeconomic aspects under the Upper Rajang Development Agency (URDA), has demonstrated responsibility and commitment, and should continue to be given the mandate to serve.
Nanta made the remarks while officiating the Dewan Kebiau Song, which he described as another important public facility for the local community. The multipurpose hall was built at a cost of RM1.9 million, with funding approved by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg during his Walkabout Programme in 2023.
He stressed that the hall should not be viewed merely as a physical structure, but be fully utilised as a community activity centre to help build human capital, adding that it is a shared responsibility to ensure the facility is well maintained and not neglected.
The newly completed Dewan Kebiau Song in Kapit. In his speech, Nanta noted that Song has seen significant progress compared to the past, particularly in terms of infrastructure development. He said future planning should now place greater emphasis on improving the socioeconomic conditions of the people to raise living standards.
He also underscored the importance of people-centric development, calling for continuous dialogue between leaders and the public to ensure that development initiatives are properly implemented and truly benefit the rakyat.
At the same event, Nanta announced assistance for nine river fishermen, comprising boats, outboard engines and fishing equipment, which will be channelled through URDA to help boost their income.
He also congratulated newly appointed village heads, community leaders and clan chiefs (KMKK), and expressed appreciation for their willingness to serve, acknowledging their role in strengthening grassroots leadership. — DayakDaily
