KUCHING, Dec 21: Landmark buildings across Kuching are now glowing in the colours of the Jalur Gemilang for a week, signalling the city’s pride, public support, and readiness to host the opening ceremony of the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games 2027.

According to a Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) Facebook post, the illumination follows Malaysia’s official handover of the SEA Federation flag during the closing ceremony of the 2025 Thailand SEA Games at Bangkok’s Rajamangala Stadium on Dec 20.

Iconic sites in Kuching included the Dewan Bandaraya Kuching Utara (DBKU) building, Satok Bridge, Darul Hana Bridge, Musical Fountain, and several other prominent landmarks across the city.

DBKU Mayor Dato Hilmy Othman said the initiative reflects not only the city’s commitment to hosting the SEA Games opening ceremony but also the pride and enthusiasm of its residents.

“This week-long display is a symbol of Kuching’s dedication and an opportunity to inspire civic pride, boost awareness of the Games, and foster unity and patriotism among the people,” he said in a recent statement.

Hilmy added that the effort aligns with directives from the Sarawak government and the Malaysia SEA Games Organising Committee, strengthening public support for the event and showcasing Kuching as a progressive, sports-ready city.

The display is part of a broader national effort, with other states including Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, and Penang also illuminating iconic buildings in Jalur Gemilang, signalling nationwide solidarity ahead of SEA Games 2027. — DayakDaily
