KUCHING (Dec 23): Police have arrested 31 individuals, including 28 foreigners and three local men during two separate raids on apartment units operating as online gambling call centres at Jalan Song here on Monday.
Kuching district police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the raids, conducted between 2pm and 2.12pm, were based on intelligence received.
“Those arrested consist of three local men, 24 foreign men and one foreign woman – aged between 19-40.
“The police also seized computers, mobile phones as well as other gadgets believed to be used for illegal online gambling activities,” he said in a statement.
Alexson revealed that the call centre syndicate had been operating for four months, using WhatsApp and other websites to promote various types of online gambling, targeting customers in Australia and China.

It was also believed that all of the individuals arrested were working full-time at the centre.
“The case is being investigated under Section 4(1)(G) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953; as well as under Section 6(1)(C) and Section 15(1)(C) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
“All suspects have been brought to the Magistrate Court today, and are being remanded for three days,” he said.
