KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg sees the spirit of hijrah (migration) as a powerful tool for positive change and continued development in the state.

“The concept of hijrah brings about various dimensions.

“Through initiatives exploring various new fields, especially involving technology, biodiversity, and sustainability, it has the potential to yield good returns for Sarawak.

“We should always look forward and have a clear vision so that we are not stuck in the old ways.

“Therefore, the spirit of hijrah is necessary because only through true migration can we continue to advance,” he said in a speech read by Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunication (Utility) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi during the closing ceremony of the Maal Hijrah Festival 1446H/2024 at Sarawak State Mosque today (July 14).

Abang Johari also praised the Sarawak State Mosque Welfare Trust Board (LAKMNS) for its successful festival which could strengthen the function of the mosque institution.

“This is what should be done by the management or committees of mosques to ensure that this institution remains relevant and responsive to the needs of the community, as long as it does not exceed the boundaries of Sharia,” he added.

He hoped that similar festivals would continue and inspire other mosques in Sarawak.

“I believe that mosques can play a more proactive and dynamic role in instilling the spirit of hijrah, not only to Muslims, but also to our friends of different faiths.”
