Malaysia Day charity haircut event sets national record with 919 participants

KUCHING, Sept 17: A total of 919 participants took part in the 916 United Charity Haircut at AEON Mall on Malaysia Day, earning a place in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) for the Most Participants in a Charity Haircut Event.

Organised by Barber Boss in collaboration with the P195 Bandar Kuching Service Centre, the event transformed a simple haircut into a community-driven charitable effort, bringing together thousands of people, barbers and volunteers from 10am to 10pm in support of various welfare organisations.

Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii said the achievement was more than just a national record, describing it as a reflection of the spirit of unity, generosity and community service that Malaysia Day represents.

“The true success of the event was not merely the record itself, but the willingness of so many people to come together for a good cause and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others,” he said in a statement today.

Around 40 barbers and volunteers contributed their time and expertise throughout the day, offering haircuts for RM10 each. Senior citizens, persons with disabilities and students received the service free of charge.

Dr Yii also contributed RM10,000 towards the initiative and personally sponsored free haircuts for 50 participants.

He said the programme demonstrated how collective action and community participation could create a positive impact, particularly when individuals and organisations work together towards a common goal.

Funds raised from the event will be channelled to six charitable organisations in Sarawak, namely PDK Sentuhan Kasih Kuching, The Salvation Army, Kuching Autistic Association, Sarawak Society of the Deaf, Pertubuhan Orang Cacat Sarawak (POCS), and Wishesland International.

Dr Yii expressed his appreciation to everyone involved in making the event a success, particularly Barber Boss for spearheading the record-setting effort.

He also thanked the participants, volunteers, barbers, organisers and supporting partners whose contributions helped turn the initiative into a meaningful Malaysia Day celebration.

According to Dr Yii, the overwhelming response underscored the values of unity, compassion and mutual support, bringing people from all walks of life together in the spirit of giving back to the community. — DayakDaily
