Malaysia’s formation must be understood to preserve unity among younger generations

KUCHING, Sept 17: The history behind Malaysia’s birth carries a responsibility that extends beyond one generation, with younger Malaysians urged to understand the nation’s origins and preserve the unity forged through its formation.

Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said understanding how Malaysia came into being was essential for youths to appreciate the journey behind the nation’s formation and carry forward the spirit of unity that brought its people together.

“The history of the formation of our nation through this process of negotiations did not happen on its own.

“It must be understood and accurately conveyed to the younger generation so that they understand the origins of the country and, subsequently, shoulder the responsibility of preserving this unity,” he said in his Malaysia Day 2026 message at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) last night (Sept 16).

Abdul Karim said the formation of the federation of Malaysia on Sept 16, 1963, was a defining moment in the country’s journey, founded on the spirit of understanding and cooperation among Malaya, Singapore, Sarawak and Sabah.

Despite Singapore’s departure from the federation in 1965, Malaysia continued to move forward as one family.

He also pointed to Sarawak’s rich diversity of races, religions and cultures as a reflection of Malaysia’s true character, where differences are a source of strength and unity.

“This is the spirit of Segulai Sejalai, where diversity is not a divider, but a strength that unites Malaysia’s big family,” he said.

Abdul Karim said this year’s Malaysia Day celebration at the BCCK was a great honour for Sarawak as the host State.

He said the theme, ‘Malaysia MADANI: Kesejahteraan Dinikmati’, was closely aligned with the aspirations of Malaysians for peace, fair opportunities and a secure future.

“True well-being is not merely reflected in economic figures. Instead, it means that every citizen, whether in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah or Sarawak, is able to enjoy a peaceful life, fair opportunities and a secure future,” he said.

He added that the MADANI values were in line with the foundations of the federation, which stood firmly on cooperation and mutual respect.

Abdul Karim also called on Malaysians to renew their commitment to safeguarding harmony among the regions and ensuring that the benefits of development were shared inclusively.

“Regardless of our backgrounds, we remain under one shared identity, which is Malaysia,” he said. — DayakDaily
