Man in Miri jailed two months for drug abuse

MIRI (July 12): The Magistrate’s Court here today sentenced a 49-year-old man to two months in jail after he pleaded guilty to drug abuse charges.

The court also ordered the man to be under police supervision for two years.

Zaini Shukor from Kampung Pujut Tanjung Batu was found to be positive for methamphetamine at 11.40pm on January 26, 2023 at the Miri Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department, and was charged under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Under the Act, the accused can be fined up to RM5,000 or imprison for up to two years, and is required to undergo supervision by an officer as defined under Section 2 of the Drug Dependents (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983 for a period of not less than two years and not more than three years according to Section 38B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

The case was prosecuted by Inspector Mudzilawati Abdul Rahman before Magistrate Randu Rangen, and the accused was not represented by a defence lawyer.
