Man injured in excavator ordeal

KUCHING: A 57-year-old worker was injured after becoming trapped in the tracked wheel section of an excavator at a site along JKR Batu Lintang here this morning.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said the incident occurred at about 8.16am near a coffee shop at the site, prompting a response from personnel of the Batu Lintang Fire and Rescue Station (BBP Batu Lintang).

Firefighters arrived at the scene three minutes later and found the victim trapped in the tracked section of the excavator.

The rescue team used a crane and another excavator to move the machinery and free the victim.

The victim, who sustained injuries to his leg, was successfully extricated and handed over to the Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) team for medical examination and further treatment.

The operation was brought under control at 8.32am and concluded at 8.42am.

Following the rescue, firefighters monitored the surrounding area and briefed workers and the site supervisor on safe working procedures.

The safety briefing was particularly focused on precautions to be taken before demolition work begins to prevent similar incidents from recurring.
