SARIKEI (July 15): A serene and clean environment plays a crucial role in attracting visitors to the Pakan district, said Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom.

The adviser at the Sarawak Premier’s Office (Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development) pointed out that a beautiful natural setting complements the beauty of any developed area, making it more appealing to tourists.

“In our efforts to develop Pakan as an attractive destination for visitors from outside the district, we aim to instil a culture of cleanliness and environmental stewardship.

“Preserving the natural surroundings is essential, as tourists often choose destinations with clean and beautiful environments,” he said at the ‘Gotong-royong’ programme under the RMK12 Project for Health Promotion and Awareness at Rumah Morris, Nyalak Ili Bukit, Pakan, recently.

The programme was held to raise public awareness about the dangers of various diseases, particularly dengue fever.

Mawan, who is Pakan assemblyman, highlighted the importance of proper waste disposal and pollution prevention for the long-term sustainability of the environment.

He also encouraged longhouse residents to establish a special committee to monitor and conduct daily inspections to prevent fires.

“Establishing the safety bureau is crucial to reduce the risk of fire incidents, especially those caused by cooking appliances or other factors,” he said.

Mawan also emphasised the importance of responsible use of electrical equipment among residents, advising them to avoid overloading sockets to prevent potential short circuits.

Also present were Pakan acting District officer Janet Boondar, Meradong and Julau District Council secretary Lau Chi Sing and organising chairman Councillor Fitz Patrick.
