KUCHING (July 21): Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng has urged residents to stop feeding strays within the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) jurisdiction.
Those who do not comply may face penalties, he said.
Wee explained that some residents have been placing plastic containers with food for strays in public parks in MBKS areas.
“Such move can be regarded as an irresponsible act of littering, not to mention that it goes against the Cleanliness Ordinance,” he said during his Facebook live session ‘Shall WEE Talk’.
Wee said while he could comprehend that those feeding strays had good intentions, it is equally important to maintain the cleanliness and public health of public areas including parks.
“Please stop feeding the strays by placing plastic containers or Styrofoam in our parks,” he reiterated.
Calling for cooperation from all, he reminded that rabies cases are still happening, with one case recorded in Bau this week.
This rabies case in Bau involved a stray dog, he said.
“We hope that everyone can understand that the public and local authorities should work closely together to help the government realise the target of zero rabies so as to ensure cleanliness of public areas for the general well-being of all,” he said.
To play a role in helping the strays, Wee said people could donate cash and kind to the Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA), which is taking care of over 100 stray dogs.
He said the local authorities are looking into the feasibility of giving rabies vaccination to cats.
According to him, it would not be appropriate to have mass rabies vaccination for dogs and cats simultaneously at the same venue.
As such, he said they are figuring out a better measure to offer rabies vaccination for cats.
