MIRI (July 20): Mayor Adam Yii hopes that the government’s democratic system would continue to co-exist with the royal institution – a relationship that has been in practice for a long time.

In stating this, he also calls upon all fellow Malaysians to appreciate the contributions made by the royal institution.

The Pujut assemblyman also believes that the existence of the royal institution is key to strengthening the people’s unity.

“We, as citizens, also play a proactive role in preventing issues touching on race, religion and the King, from emerging,” he said this in his speech for the ‘Jalinan Insan Wahana Aspirasi (Jiwa) Komuniti Madani N74 Pujut’ programme at Masjid Darul Ehsan Piasau here today, held in conjunction with the installation ceremony for the 17th King of Malaysia.

According to Yii, the coverage of the grand, tradition-steeped ceremony could increase the people’s knowledge about the customs and process behind the installation of the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong.

“We do hope that the Information Department would continue holding similar programmes in the future,” he added.

Earlier, Miri Information officer Aidawatie Mustapha said that the department had always been responsible for delivering the latest information, but it must also make sure that everything was authentic, accurate and verified.

“Our delivery of information goes to all levels of the community, ensuring no person is left out from receiving information about government policies and initiatives.

“I hope those attending the programme would benefit from the information provided through the live screening and exhibitions.

“I call upon all of us to understand that the institution of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Malay Rulers must be defended, and that we as citizens are obliged to show loyalty to the King so we can live peacefully without chaos,” she said.

Also present at the programme were deputy mayor Ariffin Mohamad, Penghulu Kamaruddin Reduan and Piasau Jaya Community head Samion Gani.
