MIRI (July 13): Miri Mayor Adam Yii lauded the initiative by the Miri Food Entrepreneur Programme (Umami) for helping to preserve and promote local delicacies.

He said the programme also plays an important role in presenting the identity and uniqueness of Miri’s multiracial community.

“The Miri Food Entrepreneur Programme celebrates Miri’s rich cultural heritage through its focus on culinary innovation and tradition,” he said when officiating Umami at a local hotel here Thursday.

Yii’s text speech was read by Councillor Vincent Huang Huat Choon.

He also pointed out that the programme was a transformative initiative aimed at empowering potential food entrepreneurs from the underprivileged group here.

Through comprehensive training, guidance and access to resources, Umami equips participants with the skills and knowledge needed to turn culinary dreams into thriving businesses, he added.

By fostering innovation and sustainability in the local food and beverage (F&B) sector, Yii said Umami not only increases economic opportunities but also preserves and promotes Sarawak’s rich gastronomic heritage.

He pointed out further that Umami’s commitment was also in line with Miri city’s vision for sustainable development and poverty eradication.

“By empowering participants, Umami not only introduces local food but also creates meaningful economic opportunities for the people of Miri,” he said.

Yii hoped that more similar initiatives can be implemented in the future for Mirians to help boost their economic growth.

He also praised the support of the SAGO Group and the Hong Leong Foundation in empowering the local community through the programme.
