MIRI (July 15): Miri Malay community leader Temenggong Datuk Abdul Rahman Abang Fadzail passed away yesterday at the age of 82.
His daughter Rozana said he died at Miri Hospital shortly after being taken to the emergency unit around 2pm.
“My father left the house at around 1pm yesterday for Miri Airport to welcome haj pilgrims who were returning home.
“At around 2pm, I received a call saying that my father had fainted at the airport and was rushed to Miri Hospital, where he was pronounced dead,” she said when met at At-Taqwa Mosque here today.
Among those paying their last respects were Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting and Kabong assemblyman Mohd Chee Kadir.
Ting said he was saddened by Abdul Rahman’s sudden passing and described it as a big loss to the community here.
“We have lost a wonderful community leader; a very warm and friendly community leader. He was like a father figure to me as I often sought advice from him on many things,” he said.
Abdul Rahman was laid to rest at the Pujut 5 Muslim Cemetery.
He had served as temenggong since 2009.
He was awarded the Panglima Setia Bintang Sarawak (PSBS), which carries the title ‘Dato’ in 2019.
