Miri woman gets RM1,200 fine for illegal lottery numbers

MIRI (July 15): The Magistrates’ Court here today fined a woman RM1,200 in default two weeks’ imprisonment for having illegal lottery numbers in her possession.

Magistrate Randu Rangen convicted Chiong Hui Peng, 25, of Bandar Baru Permyjaya here on her own guilty plea to a charge under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.

The Section provides for a fine not exceeding RM5,000, or up to six months in prison, or both upon conviction.

According to the facts of the case, Chiong was found to be in possession of a piece of paper containing several digits, which were illegal lottery numbers.

She committed the offence on July 3 at around 4.40pm in front of a coffee shop at Old Man Street here.

In mitigation, she pleaded for leniency as she is jobless and this was her first offence.

Insp Mudzilawati Abdul Rahman prosecuted the case, while Chiong was unrepresented by legal counsel.
