SARIKEI (July 16): The Education Ministry (MoE) must address the pressing issue of dilapidated schools in the Tanjong Manis parliamentary constituency.

In making this call, the MP Yusuf Abdul Wahab says there are many schools in his area that are still in severely poor condition.

“I have consistently raised this concern in many parliamentary sessions and debates.

“Although one or two schools have received the approval for upgrading and repair works, there are still many in Tanjong Manis that desperately need assistance from the federal government,” he said in a report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas).

Yusuf highlighted this issue prior to presenting education incentives to 32 outstanding students who achieved 5As and above in their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2023 examinations, at the Tanjong Manis service centre last Sunday.

He also spoke about one specific concern related to education in Tanjong Manis, namely the abandoned project at SK Penibong.

According to him, the site has remained ‘untouched’ for over three years after it was abandoned by the appointed contractor.

“The neglected project site poses danger to the children attending the primary school. I urge the Education Ministry to act upon this issue immediately, and find ways to resume the project.”

Yusuf also urged the MoE to address safety concerns at SK Orang Kaya Muda Pakeri in Kampung Paloh.

“The school building has been declared unsafe for occupation. Currently, the pupils have to make do with the makeshift classrooms at a converted hostel block.

“Clearly, these inadequate conditions hinder their learning and overall comfort,” he pointed out.
