KUCHING: Sarawak is set to unveil its Net Zero Strategy and Carbon Plan on Nov 6, marking another step in the state’s sustainability agenda.

Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Sarawak (MEESTY) Corporate Development and Economy Division head Dr Kho Lip Khoon said the strategy would be presented in a simplified manner to help the public better understand its objectives.

He said the ministry planned to screen a film explaining the concept of net zero and its relevance to everyday life.

“The movie itself that explains the Net Zero Strategy is something that we hope that it will get to every layer of community,” he said at the ‘Shaping Sarawak’s Sustainable Future: Advancing Skills, Energy and Circular Development through Policy and Partnership’ forum at a hotel today.

Kho said the strategy would complement existing sustainability frameworks, including the Energy Transition Policy introduced last year and the Sarawak Sustainability Blueprint.

He said these initiatives reflected Sarawak’s shift from reliance on natural resources towards renewable energy, clean energy and circular economy practices.

“Moving towards renewable, looking into circular economy, towards clean energy, and so on, this is the changing landscape that Sarawak is building,” he said.

Kho also stressed the importance of collaboration among government agencies, industry players and academic institutions in advancing the state’s sustainability agenda.

He said continued engagement and cooperation were essential to ensuring the effective implementation of sustainability policies.

He added that discussions on the Climate Change Institutional Arrangement (CCIA) had focused on strengthening federal-state coordination ahead of proposed climate change legislation.

Kho also encouraged greater participation by university students in sustainability discussions to prepare the next generation for Sarawak’s transition towards a green economy.
