KUCHING, June 9: Miri City Mayor Adam Yii has advised residents not to panic buy or excessively stockpile bottled water ahead of the scheduled 36-hour water supply disruption that is expected to affect several areas in Miri starting tomorrow (June 10).
In a Facebook post, he said based on the council’s communication with local supermarkets and suppliers, merchants are actively replenishing their stocks and arranging additional supplies from outside Miri, with shipments of drinking water will continue to arrive over the coming days.
“In fact, most households only need to prepare an adequate amount of drinking and cooking water. Water for daily household use can be stored in advance using pails, containers, or water storage tanks.
“This is a planned maintenance exercise, and the water supply interruption is expected to last approximately 36 hours, not an extended period. We encourage everyone to purchase according to their actual needs and leave sufficient supplies for other families in the community,” said.
At the same time, Yii, who is also the assemblyman for Pujut, urged businesses and retailers to uphold their social responsibility by maintaining reasonable prices and refraining from taking advantage of the situation through excessive price increases.
“Let us work together, remain calm, and respond responsibly. With mutual understanding and cooperation, we will be able to get through this temporary inconvenience smoothly,” he said.
The scheduled repair works will commence at 5pm tomorrow at Batu 7, Jalan Miri-Bintulu, after a leak was detected in the main pipeline system, and repair works are expected to be completed by 8pm on June 11 (Thursday).
Sarawak Water explained that the water disruption is expected to last 24 hours, followed by a 12-hour system recovery period, bringing the total restoration time to approximately 36 hours. — DayakDaily
