KUCHING (July 14): Over 100 individuals took part in the 10th United Nations International Day of Yoga held at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) here today.
Themed ‘Yoga at Home, Yoga with the World’, the event, which was supported by the Indian High Commission, was graced by Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.
In his address, Wee said the International Day of Yoga aims to raise awareness of the many benefits of practising yoga.
According to him, yoga is practised in various forms around the world and continues to grow in popularity.
“Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice skill that originated in India. The word ‘yoga’ derives from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolising the union of body and consciousness.
“People from any religion and background can practise this as it is an art to keep both the body and the mind healthy. This is an important aspect in our life because both physical and mental health lead to a happy life,” he said.
Wee was pleased that people had gathered to embrace and share their intentions in educating the public on the importance of achieving a healthy mind and body through regular practice of yoga and meditation.
He believed that such event would bring a wholesome benefit to the community here.
Given this, he appealed to other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to organise similar programmes for the local community especially the youths, who are the future leaders.
The mayor thanked the participants for dedicating their time to show their support for the event.
He also extended appreciation to the Brahma Kumaris Foundation, Kuching Branch, yoga instructor Maryam Evetovics, Elite Wushu Club, Taiwan Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation Malaysia (Kuching) for making the event a success.
“I would like to reassure that MBKS will give full support and cooperation to all NGOs in organising beneficial programme for our community,” pledged Wee.
He was also delighted to note that similar events are also coordinated and conducted by the Brahma Kumaris in all major cities in Malaysia including Malacca, Ipoh and Kuala Lumpur as well as those around the world.
