KUCHING, Dec 21: Emotional well-being is as important as medical treatment in determining patient recovery and the performance of healthcare staff, Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said, highlighting the need to address both physical and psychological health in hospitals.
According to him, patients with stronger mental resilience tend to recover faster and respond more effectively to treatment, while healthcare workers operating under constant pressure also require support to perform optimally.
“Hospitals face not only physical and logistical challenges but also emotional and psychological pressures that affect patients, families, doctors, nurses, and other healthcare personnel,” he said during the 2nd United Nations World Meditation Day celebration held here today.
He emphasised that recovery is not solely dependent on medical treatment.
“The mindset and emotional state of patients can influence how effectively they heal,” he added, noting that doctors, nurses, and hospital staff also work in highly stressful environments where their resilience directly impacts the quality of care delivered.
As Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government (MPHLG), Dr Sim highlighted initiatives such as meditation as vital tools for both staff and patients to pause, refocus, and maintain mental resilience amid demanding workloads.
Drawing on medical observations, he noted that patients with a strong mindset often recover faster than those overwhelmed by stress or anxiety.
World Meditation Day, observed annually on Dec 21 following its proclamation by the United Nations General Assembly, aims to raise awareness of meditation as a tool for mental health, resilience, and inner peace.
He said the event serves as a reminder that emotional and mental support is essential for both patients and healthcare workers. — DayakDaily
