BAU (July 27): The Association of Research and Development Movement of Singai Sarawak (Redeems) has received approval from the Sarawak government for the plan to elevate its iconic Gawai Carnival into becoming an international event.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced his support during the Gawai Carnival Redeems (GCR) at the Bidayuh Cultural Village near the Redeems Centre in Apar, here tonight.

“This place will become a cultural centre with its own stage and longhouses.

“I support the proposal to host the tribal festival here, and I will instruct (Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts) Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah to work on this tribal centre,” he said in his speech.

Earlier, Redeems president Datuk Peter Nansian shared with the attendees the association’s plan to upgrade their Gawai Carnival into an international festival next year.

“The association is seeking the state government’s cooperation to transform the carnival into a world tribal festival by 2025.

“This initiative aims to showcase Sarawak’s tribes and also serve as a platform to bring in tribes from around the world.”

Nansian said to accommodate such a large event, Redeems would be looking to upgrade the facilities and parking space.

In response, Abang Johari announced that the Sarawak government would provide an additional Minor Rural Project (MRP) fund of over RM1 million, meant to develop the parking space.

“I hope this would benefit the Redeems community,” said the Premier.

On the association’s request for air-conditioning units at the centre, Abang Johari said he was informed by the Public Works Department (JKR) and Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA) chief executive officer Datu Ik Pahon Joyik that the tender process would be set this November.

“A contractor will be appointed, and it (works) will be completed before the next Gawai.

“At the next carnival, there will be no more fans. I want the venue to be cool before I arrive,” said Abang Johari.
