KUCHING: The special allocation of RM50 million for the empowerment of the national language and literature in Budget 2025 has been hailed as a historic and unprecedented moment.

Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) Malaysia director-general Hazami Jahari expressed his gratitude for the significant allocation and emphasised its importance in promoting the development of the national language and literary heritage.

“This is a historic moment that has never happened before. The RM50 million allocation reflects the Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s confidence and concern for the language and literature” he said.

He said this in his speech during the Tinta Kenyalang 2024 Award Ceremony held at the State Legislative Assembly building here last night (Oct 18).

Hazami added that the allocation was not granted solely because of DBP’s standing, but rather a recognition of the institution’s efforts and the federal government’s belief in DBP’s ability to execute its language and cultural agenda.

“Events like this (the Tinta Kenyalang Awards) are also a sign of how Sarawak has taken the lead over other states in empowering the national language and literature,” he added.

Earlier, Anwar announced the RM50 million allocation to DBP as part of the Madani government’s effort to promote national art, culture, language, and literature.

“I’ve always emphasised the Asian Renaissance Movement that economic development must go hand in hand with the development of culture and values,” said Anwar during the 2025 Budget presentation on Oct 18.

According to Anwar, the allocation will support various initiatives, including the translation of great works, theatre performances, and the preservation of minority languages, such as the Siamese ethnic group.
