KUCHING, 12 Oct: Sarawak has the potential to explore hybrid aviation fuel production based on palm oil sources, thus opening up opportunities for the Sarawak Land Association and Restoration Authority (SALCRA) to develop as a new player in the energy industry.

Sarawak Premier, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the potential could be explored through research into combining fatty acids from palm oil with hydrocarbons to produce alternative fuels for aviation sector.

According to him, the resources from the palm oil industry should not be concentrated solely on palm oil production, but rather should be used to develop high-value derivatives including steel, biobased and aviation fuels.

"In this regard, I suggest that studies be carried out to produce hybrid fuels by combining fatty acids with hydrocarbons", he said as he was speaking at the SALCRA 50th Anniversary Golden Jubilee Dinner Meeting on Sow, Grow, Prosper here tonight.

Brother Johari said that the development of world aviation industry which is increasingly focusing on cleaner energy use provides an opportunity for Sarawak to explore this technology, especially taking into account the state's palm oil resources.

He argued that if the research were successful, SALCRA would be able to diversify its economic activities beyond the conventional field sector.

"Imagine if we could produce hybrid flight fuel. SALCRA may potentially be Aramco in Sarawak", he said, referring to Saudi Arabia's oil giant.

According to him, the success of exploring fuel production has the potential to transform SALCRA's business landscape and create additional revenue sources from the palm oil industry.

However, Brother Johari stressed that the proposal still requires research to assess the suitability of the technology and its production.

He wants SALCRA to have the courage and determination to explore new areas of business as part of efforts to transform Sarawak's economy over the next 50 years. - TVS
