KUCHING, Oct 16: Sarawak Energy Berhad’s operational and retail subsidiary, Syarikat Sesco Bhd, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Netrunner Sdn Bhd regarding the sale and purchase of electricity for Netrunner’s Sarawak Data Centre Park (SDCP), the first energy-efficient Tier 4 data centre hub in the State, with completion scheduled for 2030.
The signing ceremony between Sarawak Energy, represented by its Group chief executive office Datuk Sharbini Suhaili, and Netrunner by directors Ronnie Lim and Tew Boon Teik, took place during the International Digital Economy Conference Sarawak (IDECS) 2024 at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here today, witnessed by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
According to a media release, the SDCP is set to establish a new standard for data centre operations in Malaysia by addressing the increasing demand for advanced data storage and processing capabilities in the region.
The project aims to support local economic development while incorporating energy-efficient technologies and sustainable practices, in line with Sarawak’s commitment to green energy and responsible development.
Sharbini emphasised that the agreement with Netrunner demonstrates Sarawak Energy’s dedication to meeting the growing digital infrastructure needs of the region with reliable, renewable energy.
“As we work towards becoming a digital utility by 2025, collaborations like this align with our vision of building a sustainable energy future while supporting Sarawak’s aspiration to becoming a leader in the digital economy,” he said.
Lim noted that establishing this Tier 4 data centre hub will enhance Sarawak’s reputation as a forward-thinking, digitally advanced region.
“This project will contribute to job creation, foster technological innovation, and promote eco-friendly development initiatives. It embodies a vision where digital infrastructure growth harmonises with environmental stewardship and social responsibility, paving the way for a more sustainable future in Sarawak,” he added.
As a Tier 4 data centre facility, the SDCP will ensure high reliability, featuring fault tolerance and redundancy in all critical systems to maintain consistent operations and data security.
The data centre will provide infrastructure that supports both local enterprises and international clients, further establishing Sarawak as a hub for digital innovation. — DayakDaily
