KUCHING, Jan 25: Political pundit Dato Peter Minos has welcomed Sarawak’s move to share its electricity supply with Sabah, describing it as a positive and strategic step that reflects stronger cooperation between the two Borneo states.
He said the initiative was a “pleasant surprise” and symbolised a friendly and mutually beneficial partnership between Sarawak and Sabah.
“Sarawak and Sabah are good neighbours. We share many things in common culturally, economically and historically.
“This cooperation on electricity shows the spirit of working together for mutual benefit,” he said in a statement today.
Minos noted that relations between the people of Sabah and Sarawak have always been warm and harmonious, with both societies known for being tolerant and fair on religious and racial matters.
Minos also said both Sabah and Sarawak share similar concerns in their dealings with what he described as “big brother Malaya”, particularly over unfulfilled commitments under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
“Up to now, Malaya has not returned all the rights and powers promised under MA63 to Sabah and Sarawak.
“There are also matters that have caused dissatisfaction in both states, including issues related to the management of petroleum resources,” he said.
According to Minos, this makes it even more important for Sabah and Sarawak to strengthen their collaboration and present a united front in safeguarding their interests.
“The more Sabah and Sarawak cooperate and work together, the better.
“They can expand cooperation in many areas such as tourism, the economy, culture and environmental protection,” he said.
He added that both states could also work more closely in engaging the federal government on policies that affect Borneo, through constructive dialogue and collective representation.
Minos also welcomed improved connectivity between the two states, particularly with the upcoming AirBorneo airline, which he said would further strengthen people-to-people ties.
“All of us have friends in Sabah. With AirBorneo coming up, Sabah and Sarawak will be even more closely linked. This is something good and should be welcomed,” he stated. — DayakDaily
