KUCHING, May 30: The Scout-Guide campsite in Matang has reached 70 per cent completion and is expected to become a centre for camping, training and youth development activities once fully completed.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the camp, which is jointly used by the Sarawak Scouts Council (SSC) and the Girl Guides Association of Malaysia Sarawak Branch, is being developed to support scouting and guiding activities in the State.

“We have a site that has been handed over to the Scout and Guide movements. It was previously used for a jamboree, and now the land is being managed for the use of Scouts and Guides as a camping site for their activities,” he told reporters after the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Sarawak Scouts Headquarters at Jalan Batu Lintang here today.

Abang Johari, who is the Sarawak Chief Scout, said a building being developed at the site is currently about 70 per cent completed, with the remaining 30 per cent still under construction.

According to him, the facility will provide a venue for members of the Scout and Guide movements throughout Malaysia to gather and organise activities.

“It will become a space and facility for the Guide and Scout movements throughout Malaysia to meet and carry out their activities there,” he added.

On July 2, 2022, Abang Johari announced a sum of RM12 million to upgrade the campsite during the Sarawak First Rover Moot at Kuching Waterfront.

Also present were SSC president Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom, National Scouts Council vice president Dato Mohamad Safri Abdillah, Deputy National Chief Scout Commissioner Ahmad Sabri Saad, SSC vice president Jumaat Ibrahim, and Sarawak Chief Scout Commissioner John Lim Boon Beng. — DayakDaily
