SHAH ALAM (Aug 3): The Selangor government is offering a RM10,000 victory incentive to individual athletes who win gold medals at the 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Sarawak, starting Aug 17.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said for team events with five or fewer players, each gold medalist will receive a reward of RM5,000.
“Such incentives have been in place since 2015, and considering developments over time, we are looking to review and enhance the rewards for athletes.
“I hope this announcement will motivate our athletes and the state contingent to excel at this Sukma,” he said,” he told a press conference after the Selangor contingent flag handover ceremony for the 2024 Sukma here today.
However, he did not disclose the rewards for silver and bronze medalists, emphasising that athletes should aim for the main incentive and strive to replicate Selangor’s achievement as overall champions at the 2016 Sukma in Sarawak.
For this edition, Selangor, participating in all 37 events, aims to win 61 gold medals and will be represented by 1,050 individuals, including 704 athletes, 213 team officials and 133 team secretariat members.
Selangor previously won the Sukma championship nine times. In the 2022 Sukma, the state contingent finished fourth with a tally of 32 gold, 54 silver and 45 bronze medals. – Bernama
