Sibu New Year’s Day shooting suspect gets further four-day remand

SIBU (July 15): Police today obtained a further four-day remand order against a suspect in a shooting case at Lorong 3, Jalan Wong King Huo here on Jan 1.

Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili confirmed this when contacted on WhatsApp.

However, he refused to disclose when and where the suspect was arrested, stating the case is still under police investigation.

Magistrate Romario Jonoi issued the remand order.

Dozens of policemen were observed at the Sibu Court Complex compound this morning.

The suspect and the policemen escorting him were also seen wearing bulletproof vests as they made their way to and from the courtroom.

It is understood that the suspect in his mid-20s was first remanded for seven days starting July 8 to assist with the police investigation.

On Jan 2, Zulkipli had told a press conference that the shooting injured three victims aged between 27 and 33.

He said the first victim suffered gunshot wounds to his left thigh, right thigh, and right leg, while the second victim suffered a gunshot wound on his right shoulder, and the third victim was injured on his left shoulder.

Zulkipli said the police found 10 9mm calibre bullet casings, believed to have been fired from semi-automatic pistols, at the scene.

“Our investigation found that at 4.55pm, two male suspects were riding two motorcycles. One of the suspects went towards a victim who was drinking with five friends at the shop.

“The suspect then fired several shots at the victim. The other suspect, who was about 20 metres outside the shop, also fired shots towards the victim,” he said.
