KUCHING, June 8: The completion of a new block at SMK Semop in Daro, 164 days ahead of schedule, has been hailed as a benchmark for future government development projects.
Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi commended the project team for not only completing the project ahead of schedule, but also for doing it without requiring any Extension of Time (EOT).
“This achievement reflects a high level of efficiency and professionalism and should serve as a benchmark for future government development projects.
“To the contractors, I would like to remind you that the trust placed in you must be upheld with integrity and responsibility, particularly in ensuring that all defects reported during the Defects Liability Period (DLP) are addressed promptly, efficiently and comprehensively,” he said during a handover ceremony for the completion of two new blocks for SMK Dalat and SMK Semop, which was held at SMK Dalat today where his text speech was made available to the media.
It was also revealed from a press handout that the SMK Dalat project was completed ten days ahead of schedule.
At the same time, Nanta, who is Kapit MP, urged the Public Works Department (JKR) to strengthen post-handover monitoring to ensure that all facilities remain in good condition, are safe for use, and continue to comply with the required standards and specifications.
Touching on the projects, he said it reflected the government’s ongoing commitment to strengthening access to more conducive, modern and high-quality educational facilities for future generations.
For the SMK Dalat development project, a new academic block comprising 18 classrooms was constructed, complete with educational and support facilities including workshops, laboratories, sports and education management rooms, as well as a School Textbook Loan Scheme Operations Room (BOSS).
The project also includes supporting facilities such as a canteen, surau, guardhouse, utility and sewerage systems, parking areas, and covered walkways.
As for SMK Semop, the project involved the construction of 12 new classrooms equipped with modern facilities, including disability-friendly amenities such as accessible toilets, parking spaces, and ramps.
The project also provides supporting infrastructure such as a systematic water supply and sewerage system, electrical and mechanical installations, a pump house, and covered walkways.
Both projects were implemented by JKR’s Special Project Team 2 (PPK2) through the Design and Build approach.
The SMK Dalat project was awarded to Welfield Services Sdn Bhd on Nov 22, 2022, with a contract value of RM27.19 million, while the SMK Semop project was awarded to KSB Global Sdn Bhd on Dec 26, 2023, with a contract value of RM10.55 million.
According to the press handout, the SMK Semop project was completed on Jan 16, 2026, while the SMK Dalat project was completed on Dec 30, 2025.
Both projects were implemented using Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology and the Industrialised Building System (IBS) to ensure higher-quality, more organised, and faster construction.
