SIBU (July 21): Some 30 children in the Bawang Assan constituency took part in the ‘Jom Ke Perpustakaan’ programme, organised by Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC).
Held at the Perpustakaan Desa Bawang Assan, this community literacy programme meant to encourage the children to go to the library and make use of the reading materials there, as well as to promote lifelong learning.
SRDC Environment and Public Health Standing Committee chairman Councillor Kevin Lau, speaking on behalf of council chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai, thanked the local community for their support towards this initiative.
“I hope this would attract the young ones to get to know more about our local library, as well as for them to utilise its facility,” he said.
“It is our hope that the children would consider the library as their second home, a place for them to gain more knowledge and acquire a good reading habit.
“Although a lot of reading materials could be obtained from the Internet these days, a library is still the best place to gain knowledge, to keep away from unhealthy activities while building friendships,” added Lau.
