KUCHING (Aug 23): Sarawak’s Soo Hui Yii and Lydia Liong managed a silver medal in the 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma XXI) tennis women’s doubles after losing to Sharifah Elsa Wan Abdul Rahman and Saw Jo Leen of Selangor in the final today.
They were beaten 4-6, 4-6 by their Selangor opponents despite leading in both sets.
The match had to be played this morning at the Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) Centre due to bad weather yesterday.
Both Hui Yii and Lydia said they did their best in the final match but this was not enough to secure victory.
Hui Yii previously won a silver medal in the mixed doubles category for Sukma 2022 in Kuala Lumpur.
This is Lydia’s first Sukma medal and she will receive a second medal after the mixed doubles final this evening.
Hui Yii added she will aim for a gold medal in the next Sukma as she is still eligible to participate.
“I’m 19, so I have one more Sukma to go,” she added.
Both players will be travelling to their respective universities in the United States immediately after Sukma ends.
Hui Yii will be going to Oklahoma while Lydia is headed to Michigan.
